The Senator Istifanus Gyang Campaign Council has rejected the outcome of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Plateau North Senatorial primary election, insisting that the exercise was not properly conducted.
The Director General of the Campaign Council, Comrade Lot Adas, made the position known in a statement issued in Jos, saying recent developments surrounding the primary had raised “serious concerns among party faithful and lovers of democracy.”
He alleged that party members were denied a free and fair opportunity to elect their candidate through a transparent democratic process.
Adas said the foundation of credible democracy rests on internal party democracy, fairness, due process and respect for the people’s mandate.
While noting that political leadership and influence are legitimate within party politics, he warned that imposing outcomes against the will of party members weakens confidence in democratic institutions.
“It is public knowledge that the senatorial primary elections were not conducted in Plateau North. Rather, results were concocted and allocated to suit a predetermined outcome,” the statement read.
He added that it would be “injurious and a negation of good conscience” for anyone to claim otherwise.
The campaign council stressed that the strength of the APC lies in its grassroots members, whose voices and participation, it said, must never be substituted by predetermined arrangements.
Adas also referenced the position of the APC national leadership, noting that the National Working Committee was reviewing reports from the Appeal Committee on the conduct of the primaries, with a final decision expected.
He urged supporters and party faithful to remain calm, vigilant and peaceful while awaiting the party’s decision, insisting that their position was rooted in justice, equity and democratic principles.
