The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) said it has enrolled more than 7.6 million workers into the Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS), while also securing the inclusion of the Nigeria Police Force in what it described as a historic milestone for the programme.
The managing director and chief executive officer of NSITF, Oluwaseun Faleye, disclosed this at the 2026 International Civil Service Conference in Abuja.
Faleye said the inclusion of the police followed high-level engagements with the Inspector-General of Police and would significantly improve welfare, morale and operational confidence among officers nationwide.
According to him, ensuring that officers and their families are protected in cases of injury or death in the line of duty would also strengthen national security by boosting morale and operational effectiveness.
“We have enrolled over 7.6 million employees into the Scheme. We secured the enrolment of the Nigeria Police Force into the ECS, a historic first, after engagements with the Inspector-General of Police.
“When our officers know that their families will be protected should they sustain injury or lose their lives in the line of duty, their confidence and gallantry will increase, and our national security will be safer for us all,” he added.
Speaking on the conference theme, “Reforms, Resilience and Results,” Faleye said the Nigerian public sector must urgently embrace reforms to meet rising demands for efficiency, accountability and citizen-centred governance.
He stressed that institutions must continue to evolve and innovate to remain effective, adding that reform is no longer optional for public agencies.
The NSITF boss also advocated integrating ECS compliance certificates into public procurement processes to ensure contractors adequately protect their workers.
On compensation delivery, he revealed that the Fund processed 22,350 claims in 2024, representing a 21 per cent increase in payouts.
Faleye said workforce protection remains critical to national productivity and economic growth, noting that civil servants form the backbone of governance.
He also welcomed the federal government’s directive mandating the Employees’ Compensation Scheme for all federal public workers, describing it as a major step toward expanding social protection coverage.
He added that institutions must become more proactive, anticipating risks and building safety nets that empower workers to thrive in the evolving economy.
