The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers across the state to embark on an indefinite strike beginning Monday, June 1, 2026, over the continued abduction of teachers and pupils.
The union said the industrial action became necessary following the failure to secure the release of the victims, whose whereabouts remain unknown.
In a statement jointly signed by the state Chairman, Hassan Fatai, and Secretary, Salami Olukayode, the union expressed deep concern over the prolonged captivity of the abducted teachers and pupils, describing the situation as disturbing and unacceptable.
According to the NUT, the incident has created fear among teachers, unsettled parents, and raised serious concerns about the safety of schools and learning environments across the state.
The union stated that the strike is aimed at compelling relevant authorities to intensify efforts towards the immediate and unconditional rescue of the victims.
Teachers were urged to comply fully with the directive, remain peaceful and law-abiding, and prioritise their safety while the strike lasts.
The NUT also expressed solidarity with the abducted teachers, pupils, and their families, assuring them that it would continue to engage government and security agencies until the victims regain their freedom.
The union reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare, safety, and security of teachers and learners, stressing that no meaningful teaching and learning can take place in an atmosphere of fear and insecurity.
