In commemoration of NYSC @ 53, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Imo State Coordinator, Mrs Doris Erumwunse has described the noble Scheme as a committed organisation with over five decades of contributing to the accelerated growth of the nation.
In her address at an event held at the NYSC Imo State Secretariat to commemorate the 53 years existence of the scheme, the State Coordinator, said that the Scheme remains the strongest pillar for national integration, unity and development.
Mrs. Erumwunse explained that the scheme has continued to play a pivotal role in national development by deploying graduates across the country to serve in key sectors during their one-year mandatory national service.
She noted that Corps Members have made significant contributions in areas such as education, healthcare, agriculture, rural development, technology and electoral services, helping to strengthen communities and support government development efforts nationwide.
She noted that since the establishment of the Scheme on May 22, 1973, during the administration of General Yakubu Gowon, it has continued to fulfil the vision of its founding fathers through the dedication and resilience of Corps Members. According to her, their readiness to serve beyond their comfort zones, embrace cultural diversity and actively participate in Community Development Services has significantly contributed to national development, unity and integration.
Mrs Erumwunse, reaffirmed NYSC commitment to aligning with emerging global trends by strengthening skills acquisition, entrepreneurship development, digital literacy and youths empowerment through its Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) initiative.
SAED, she said has over the years prepared Corps Members not just for service, but for leadership and economic relevance in the present 21st century.
“The Scheme truly has continued to empower Nigerian graduates to become job creators, innovators and responsible citizens capable of competing globally while remaining committed to national unity and development.”
The highlights of the colourful event included a special citation on NYSC @53, drama presentation on the relevance of the scheme and the cutting of the anniversary cake.
Also, Mrs Doris Erumwunse, also presented letter of promotion to the newly promoted staff of the Secretariat.
In attendance were the Acting Director of South East Area Office ll represented by Mr Macaulay Tombolu, staff and corps members serving in the state.
