Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze has laid his mother, Mrs Sarah Chinyere Chukwueze, to rest in Isieke community, Umuahia, Abia State.
The burial ceremony drew several prominent figures in Nigerian football, including the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, as well as the federation’s 1st Vice President, Chief Felix Anyansi-Agwu, and Anambra State FA Chairman, Chikelue Iloenyosi.
A widely circulated video from the funeral showed the emotional moment Chukwueze broke down in tears as he said his final goodbye to his mother. The footballer’s grief was especially evident following a difficult period in his career, during which he also faced criticism after missing a penalty in Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 semi-final match against Morocco.
His mother passed away in January 2026 after battling illness, a loss that has deeply affected the family.
The news of her death was first shared publicly on Thursday, January 29, by Chukwueze’s brother, David, who expressed his pain on Instagram. In one of his posts, he wrote that the family was struggling to come to terms with the tragedy, adding: “Can’t even post your picture to say RIP mum.”
