The Sultanate has reacted to claims of a rumoured protest at the palace of the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Sa’ad Abubakar, describing the viral video circulating on social media as old and misleading.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Sultan’s Media Team, the Sultanate clarified that the footage showing people gathered at the palace while brandishing leaves dates back to the nationwide protests over economic hardship and rising food costs in 2024.
“The public is hereby advised to disregard the misleading narrative being attached to the video. There is no crisis, disagreement, or unrest involving the Sultan and his subjects,” the statement read.
The Sultanate condemned attempts to politicise the revered institution, saying mischief-makers were recirculating the video to create a false impression of tension between the Sultan and his people.
“Attempts to politicise the revered institution of the Sultanate through the circulation of outdated and politically motivated content should be condemned by all well-meaning Nigerians,” it added.
The statement also reaffirmed the Sultan’s consistent stance on national issues while emphasising the prevalence of peace at the palace.
It said, “His Eminence has always expressed concern over the hardship faced by Nigerians and continues to advocate policies and measures aimed at improving the welfare of citizens.”
“There is peace at the Sultan’s Palace. The palace and its surrounding areas remain calm and peaceful. There are currently no protests, disturbances, or security concerns in or around the palace.”
It further urged the public to always verify information before sharing it on social media or mainstream platforms.
