You can explore the famous Yankari National Park, which was established as a game reserve in 1956 and later recognised as Nigeria’s largest national park in 1991. It is said to harbour more than 50 mammal species; it’s a place to view wild animals, including baboons, elephants, antelopes, crocodiles, and hippopotamuses.
In the reserve, you can take a stroll to the Wikki Warm Spring. It’s fascinating that clear water is said to be at a regular 31 degrees centigrade all year round. And for those who crave historic knowledge, the Marshall Caves and Dukkey Wells are places to explore.
The Marshall Caves are 59 intriguing man-made rooms linked together, all chiselled straight into sedimentary sandstone precipices within the Yankari Game Reserve. It is believed that the area served as a place of refuge from invaders and 19th-century slave traders for the ancient natives who lived there.
At Dukkey Wells, you can tour the 139 interconnected sandstone wells, linked via underground shafts, created by early settlers for water storage. It is also historically used as a resting place during the 19th-century slave trade.
For hikers, you will enjoy visiting the Dass Local Government Area, home to the Dass Hills. It has a height of 889 metres and is located close to the village Bundila, near the locality Dott. The Kalban and Bula Hills are also spectacular spots for walking. They offer scenic views of the area’s landscapes. You can also tour the famous Tunga Dutse, a large sandstone embankment where you will find mysterious prehistoric rock writings.
In Bauchi State, you can visit the popular architectural monument, the mausoleum of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. The tomb is situated in the city centre. The monument is the final resting place of Nigeria’s first Prime Minister.
The Emir’s Palace, with its beautifully arched balconies and windows, is located in the centre of Bauchi City and is reported to be 200 years old. It is home to the paramount ruler of Bauchi Emirate. It also hosts festivals in the state.
If you enjoy nightlife, the Bayan Gari area is said to be worth visiting. Be cautious as you do so, and it’s best to go with a guide. Enjoy the vibrant area known for its nightspots and local food. And talking about the food, you can try out the city’s cuisine stemming from Hausa – Fulani traditional food. Masa or Waina (fermented rice cakes), Dan Wake (bean dumpling), and soups such as Miyan Kuka (Baobab Leaf soup) are staples you could enjoy.)
