The Nigerian Youth Parliament has formally declared support for Hon. Comrade Olisa Nwuruku Alfred, PhD, in his bid for the position of Senate President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
In a statement addressed to members of the House, Rt. Hon. Aliyu Idris Zakari, Speaker of the Nigerian Youth Parliament, announced that Nwuruku, who represents Ebonyi Central Senatorial District and serves as Deputy Majority Leader of the parliament, will contest the NANS Senate Presidency at the association’s National Convention and Election.
The convention is scheduled to hold from 22nd to 25th May 2026 in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory.
Zakari described Nwuruku as a former Coordinator of NANS Zone B with a track record of service to Nigerian youths and students.
He cited the candidate’s “capacity, capability, competence, confidence, and outstanding leadership qualities” as qualifications for the office, noting his experience and commitment to students’ welfare.
The Speaker called on all Honourable Members of the Youth Parliament to mobilize support for Nwaruku within their constituencies.
He urged particular focus on engaging Students’ Union Government presidents, leaders of higher institutions, stakeholders in the education and student community, and existing networks within the nationwide students’ movement.
Members were also encouraged to provide strategic engagement, advocacy, consultations, and resource mobilization to advance the campaign.
“Let us unite and stand firmly behind one of our own as he aspires to serve Nigerian students at a higher level,” Zakari said, expressing confidence in Nwaruku’s vision and ability to deliver purposeful representation for students across the country.
The statement concluded with a call for unity and a blessing for the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The NANS National Convention typically convenes student leaders from tertiary institutions across Nigeria to elect new national officers and set policy direction for the association.
