Anambra: False Helicopter Alarm Sparks Panic As Community Cracks Down On Fake Security Alerts

ONITSHA – A wave of anxiety that swept through Okudugbo and neighbouring communities following reports of a suspicious helicopter landing has now been traced to an alleged fabricated social media report, with the individual behind the viral video reportedly arrested and set to face further investigation.

Community leaders disclosed that investigations carried out after the circulation of the alarming video revealed that no helicopter landed in Okudugbo as claimed.

Instead, authorities said the suspect admitted during interrogation that he never witnessed such an incident and merely acted on unverified information.

The development followed swift intervention by the President General (PG), whose prompt response and security measures led to a fact-finding mission across Okudugbo and adjoining communities.

Accompanied by members of his security team, the PG reportedly conducted on-the-spot verification exercises and engaged residents across the affected areas.

Findings from the exercise showed that while a helicopter was seen flying over the area, there was no record of it landing or hovering suspiciously around the community.

Residents said helicopters occasionally pass over the area and that such movement had occurred several times in the past without incident.

Sources close to the investigation disclosed that the individual behind the controversial video allegedly recorded it from a residence close to CKP and was nowhere near the location he claimed in the footage.

During interrogation, he reportedly admitted creating the content based on hearsay, triggering fear and tension among residents.

The suspect is expected to be handed over to police authorities in Anaocha for further investigation over allegations of spreading false information and causing public panic.

Leaders from neighbouring communities have also condemned the act, expressing concern over the emotional distress and confusion caused by the false alarm.

The incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with the spread of unverified information on social media, especially on sensitive security matters.

Community leaders have urged residents to remain vigilant and report genuine security concerns through proper channels, while stressing the need for responsible information sharing to avoid unnecessary fear and unrest.
