Benin–Egbin 330kV Transmission Line Restored As TCN Moves To Fix Benin–Omotoso Fault

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has restored the Benin–Egbin 330kV transmission line following a major power disruption that affected Lagos and surrounding areas on Wednesday, while efforts continue to fully restore the Benin–Omotoso 330kV line.

The disruption occurred at about 8:19 a.m. when the national grid experienced voltage instability that rapidly spread across the Lagos corridor, leading to the shutdown of some generating stations, transmission line outages, and widespread electricity interruption across Lagos and its environs.

In a statement, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, said the incident triggered an emergency response aimed at preventing a broader collapse of the grid.

According to her, the National Control Centre immediately directed several power generation companies to reduce output to contain the resulting frequency rise, stabilize the system, and prevent further disruptions to the national grid.

Following the incident, Nigeria’s Minister of Power, , convened an emergency meeting with the leadership of TCN and the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) to coordinate rapid restoration efforts and assess the situation.

TCN confirmed that the Benin–Egbin 330kV transmission line, which was affected during the disturbance, has now been successfully restored and is transmitting bulk electricity to the Lagos complex.

However, the company said work is still ongoing to resolve faults on the Benin–Omotoso 330kV transmission line.

“A combined team of TCN engineers from Benin and Omotoso sub-regions are working assiduously to rectify the remaining faults on the Benin–Omotoso transmission line to ensure full restoration of bulk power supply to the Lagos complex as quickly as possible,” Mbah said.

The company apologized for the inconvenience caused by the outage, acknowledging the impact on households, businesses, and electricity consumers in affected areas.

TCN assured the public that the Ministry of Power and other relevant agencies are working to restore normal transmission operations and strengthen grid reliability to reduce future occurrences.

The company also appealed to affected consumers to remain patient as restoration work continues, promising to provide further updates as progress is made.
