BREAKING NEWS: Borno State Government Reintegrates 720 Repentant Terrorists, 992 Spouses, and Others Into Society

The Borno State Government has reintegrated 720 repentant insurgents, alongside 992 spouses and other dependents, into their respective communities after completing a rehabilitation and deradicalisation programme under the state’s non-kinetic approach to counter-insurgency.

The beneficiaries, described by government officials as low-risk participants, underwent months of rehabilitation, vocational training, psychosocial support, and religious reorientation before being cleared for reintegration. The exercise formed part of Batch 9 of the state’s ongoing rehabilitation initiative designed to encourage former fighters to abandon violent extremism and embrace peaceful coexistence.

The reintegration ceremony was held at the Hajj Camp in Maiduguri, where the participants reportedly took an oath on the Holy Quran before returning to their communities. Borno authorities have consistently maintained that the oath-taking process serves as an additional commitment mechanism aimed at discouraging a return to insurgent activities.

Officials involved in the programme said the initiative remains a key component of the state’s strategy to complement military operations by providing a pathway for individuals willing to renounce violence and reintegrate into society. The government argues that sustainable peace in the North-East requires both security operations and community-based rehabilitation efforts.

The programme, however, continues to generate mixed reactions among Nigerians. While supporters view it as an important tool for reducing insurgency and promoting reconciliation, critics have raised concerns about accountability, justice for victims, and the long-term security implications of returning former insurgents to civilian communities.

Borno State officials have repeatedly assured residents that participants undergo extensive screening, monitoring, and rehabilitation before being considered for reintegration. According to the government, thousands of individuals have passed through the state’s deradicalisation framework since the insurgency began, with authorities emphasizing continued oversight after their return to society.

The latest reintegration exercise underscores the state’s ongoing efforts to address the humanitarian and security challenges created by more than a decade of insurgency in Nigeria’s North-East region.
