Human rights activist and presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has been released from the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre following a Federal High Court ruling that restored his bail.
Sowore had been in custody since June 22, after Justice Mohammed Umar temporarily remanded him over allegations filed by the Department of State Services regarding social media posts where he reportedly referred to President Bola Tinubu as a criminal.
After successfully fulfilling the conditions of the reinstated ₦200 million bail, which included depositing his international passport and providing two sureties, the activist has regained his freedom.
His bail requirements include documentation involving an Abuja property owner and a traditional ruler from his home community.
NaijaOnPoint reports that Sowore’s previous bail was temporarily revoked following an alleged absence from the courtroom.
Prior to his release on Tuesday, the court premises had been placed under a strict security lockdown by armed operatives, a move that drew condemnation from his supporters.
Immediately after leaving the prison, the African Action Congress flagbearer took to his social media platform to declare that his time in detention had done nothing to diminish his opposition to the current administration or his plans for the upcoming 2027 general elections.
“Leaving Kuje Prison after being unjustly incarcerated by the failed traitor to the Nigerian people, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and his regime,” Sowore shared via his X handle.
He added, “Prison has never broken the resolve of those who fight for justice. If anything, it only strengthens our determination. The struggle continues. We will never surrender.”
