With first place in the group and the advantage of remaining in Vancouver at stake, Canada entered the match needing only a draw.
Instead, a disciplined Swiss side capitalised on defensive lapses after the break to secure victory and condemn Jesse Marsch’s men to a Round of 32 trip to Los Angeles.
The hosts were backed by a passionate crowd inside a packed BC Place, but clear-cut opportunities were scarce in a tense first half.

Switzerland came closest to opening the scoring when Breel Embolo latched onto a precise through ball from the left flank, only for goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau to rush off his line and make an excellent save.
The game changed dramatically less than a minute after the restart.
A flowing Swiss move carved open the Canadian defence, allowing Ruben Vargas to arrive unmarked at the far post and finish confidently after a dangerous delivery from Johan Manzambi.
The goal gave Switzerland control and exposed Canada’s defensive vulnerabilities. Just 12 minutes later, the visitors doubled their advantage through Manzambi, who reacted quickest after a series of failed clearances inside the penalty area to bundle the ball beyond Crépeau.
However, substitute Promise David reignited the atmosphere in the 76th minute. Barely a minute after entering the pitch, the striker met Mathieu Choinière’s cross at the back post and volleyed home his first World Cup goal, reducing the deficit to 2-1.
The late strike sparked renewed belief among the home supporters, but Switzerland stood firm through the closing stages to preserve their lead and secure a deserved victory.
While disappointment was evident among the Canadian faithful, the hosts remain alive in the competition and will hope to continue their impressive World Cup journey despite surrendering home advantage.
