The Rivers State Commissioner of Police (CP), Olugbenga Adepoju, has vowed to check any form of misconduct of policemen stationed at highways, noting that all officers engaged in acts of extortion, improper dress, or establishment of unlawful roadblocks would be punished accordingly.
This warning was made on Monday during a visit by the CP to some of the police checkpoints in Rivers State as a way of enforcing the professionalism of the police force.
The exercise, which is in line with the directive of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Disu, is aimed at checking the conduct of officers posted at the highways of Rivers State.
At the point where he addressed journalists, CP Adepoju noted that officers at such posts were being observed to see if they wear proper dress, show their identification badges, and deal properly with the general public.
According to him, those found in breach of the dress code or unable to identify themselves with their badges would have their personal details taken and sent to their commanders for disciplinary actions.

“Those who are not properly dressed or whose name tags are not fixed on their uniforms have had their particulars taken and will be referred to their commanders for disciplinary action at the headquarters,” Adepoju said.
The commissioner also made it clear that the process of monitoring would continue, stating that officers and heads of various departments had been instructed to tighten the reigns of oversight over the personnel under their command.
In addition, he disclosed that the inspection revealed marked improvement in terms of adherence, especially the decrease in the number of roadblocks in the Rivers-Imo axis.
He added that any roadblock that proved to be an obstruction to traffic was instantly dismantled, while officers were asked to perform the tasks of stop-and-search without disrupting the movement of traffic.
Commissioner Adepoju called upon citizens to cooperate with the police in this regard and report to the command any instances of extortion or misconduct on the part of the police.
The inspection tour visited crucial checkpoints along the East-West Road in Ikwerre and Emohua Local Government Areas and included senior police officers from the State CID, Operations Department, MP Squadrons, tactical units, and divisional commands.
