Former Governor of Lagos State and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Babatunde Raji Fashola, is set to headline the 2026 Annual Law Week of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja Branch, where discussions will centre on governance, economic transformation, and institutional accountability.
The Chairman of the Law Week Planning Committee, Mr. Chukwudi Kachikwu Enebeli, SAN, announced this during a media briefing held in Lagos on Friday.
According to Enebeli, Fashola will deliver the keynote address at the opening plenary session on the topic, “Law, Leadership and the Ballot: Governance Beyond Politics.” The event forms part of the branch’s Annual Law Week programme themed “Altering the Status Quo: Going Against the Norm,”scheduled to take place from June 19 to June 25 at the Lagos Marriott Hotel, Ikeja.
He noted that the former governor’s presentation is expected to draw on his experience in public service, including his tenure as a two-term governor of Lagos State and later as Minister of Works and Housing. The keynote address will examine governance models that promote efficiency, continuity in public institutions, and long-term development irrespective of changing political administrations.
Enebeli explained that the Law Week programme has been carefully designed to encourage meaningful engagement on some of Nigeria’s most pressing governance issues, while also advancing conversations around accountability, institutional effectiveness, and sustainable national growth.
One of the major attractions of the week-long event will be the Business Forum, which is themed “Accelerating the Future of the Nigerian Economy.” The forum is expected to convene key stakeholders from the public and private sectors, including policymakers, economists, investors, and business executives, to discuss the country’s economic prospects and reform agenda.
Among those expected to participate is the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole. Discussions at the forum will focus on areas such as investment promotion, trade reforms, industrial expansion, and measures aimed at improving Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global marketplace.
The organisers also disclosed that young legal practitioners will have a dedicated platform through the Young Lawyers’ Session titled “The Grind Before the Glory.”The session is designed to provide guidance on career progression, ethical practice, leadership development, and the changing realities of the legal profession.
Other featured events include the Bar and Bench Session themed “What is Expected on the Other Side of the Coin,” as well as the Alao Aka-Bashorun Memorial Lecture titled “2027: Building a Nation Where No Man is Oppressed.”
In addition to the intellectual engagements, the programme will feature a range of social and wellness activities, including religious observances, a health walk, and the Chairman’s Dinner.
Speaking at the briefing, Chairman of the NBA Ikeja Branch, Adeniyi Quadri, described the Annual Law Week as a significant forum for national discourse at a time when citizens are increasingly demanding stronger institutions, greater transparency, and improved governance.
Quadri expressed confidence that the deliberations and recommendations emerging from the event would contribute to improved institutional performance and deepen collaboration among the legal profession, government institutions, and the wider society.
He added that participation in all lecture sessions is free, with registration open to legal practitioners and members of the public interested in the discussions.
