The Federal Government has announced plans to roll out a nationwide digital postcode system designed to strengthen security operations, improve emergency response, and enhance public service delivery across Nigeria.
The initiative was unveiled at the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System Workshop in Abuja, where the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, disclosed that the project had received approval from the Federal Executive Council (FEC) under the National Digital Addressing Policy.
According to Tijani, the new system will assign every location in Nigeria a unique and verifiable digital address, making it easier for security agencies, emergency responders, businesses, and government institutions to accurately identify and locate places across the country.
The minister revealed that the first phase of the rollout is expected to commence in October, with several states slated for coverage before the end of the year.
He explained that the digital postcode system would enable faster coordination among agencies, improve accountability, and ensure more accurate responses during emergencies and security operations.
Beyond its security benefits, Tijani noted that the platform is expected to support logistics, e-commerce, postal services, national planning, and wider government service delivery efforts.
The minister further stated that plans are already underway to integrate the digital addressing system into public institutions as part of the government’s broader digital economy agenda aimed at modernizing service delivery and improving efficiency nationwide.
