Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P, has responded to social media users urging him to retire from music because of his age.
The debate started after a female fan on X, identified by the handle @OloriOfOloris, suggested that the former P-Square star should step away from the spotlight.
She wrote:
“I don’t get why an almost 50-year-old man is still singing like this. It’s okay to retire❤️.”
The post generated mixed reactions online, with media personality Do2dtun defending the singer. He argued that age should not determine an artist’s relevance and pointed to global music icons such as Beyoncé, Shakira, Lionel Richie, and Bruce Springsteen, who continue to perform successfully despite being older.
Reacting to the discussion, Mr P dismissed the criticism and linked it to lingering sentiments from some supporters of the now-defunct P-Square group.
Quoting Do2dtun’s post, he wrote:
“No be me increase fuel price for Naija. Frustration dey everywhere, but somehow na Mr P dem wan blame… After dem realise say all those narratives no hold water, dem come with another one: ‘Now he is too old to be singing and dancing.’ Meanwhile, na the same people go celebrate and hype Usher, Beyoncé, and Chris Brown for doing exactly the same thing.”
The singer also spoke about his solo career, stressing that he remains focused on his personal growth and success in the music industry.
He revealed that he had secured a multi-million-dollar five-year agreement with an international distribution company, covering the release of three albums.
Speaking further, Mr P declared:
“As for this solo journey? It’s one of the best things that has ever happened in my life, and I honestly don’t care what anyone thinks. Nobody can stop this movement. The train has left the station. It’s Mr P Forever! OG FOREVER drops this year, and we’re just getting started!”
His remarks reaffirm his commitment to his solo career and signal that he has no plans of stepping away from music anytime soon.
