England’s momentum at the 2026 FIFA World Cup was halted as Ghana produced a disciplined defensive display to secure a valuable 0-0 draw in Boston and boost their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
After impressing in their 4-2 opening victory over Croatia, Thomas Tuchel’s side were expected to take another step towards winning Group L.
Instead, they ran into a resilient Ghana team that defended superbly and refused to give England’s star-studded attack any space.
Ghana manager Carlos Queiroz set his team up in a compact low block, frustrating England for long periods and forcing them into a predictable attacking rhythm.
England’s best opportunity arrived late in stoppage time when substitute Nico O’Reilly struck the post with a header. The rebound fell kindly to captain Harry Kane, but the striker blazed his volley over the crossbar from close range, leaving England stunned and Ghana celebrating as if they had won.
Goalkeeper Lawrence Asare was well protected by his backline, with Kojo Peprah Oppong producing a crucial goal-line clearance in the dying moments to preserve the clean sheet.
The result leaves both teams on four points after two matches, although England remain favourites to finish top of Group L. For Ghana, however, the draw could prove decisive in their quest to reach the round of 32.
Speaking after the game, Tuchel admitted his side found it difficult to break down Ghana’s defensive structure.
“We knew it would be difficult. They went even more defensive than in the first match. We found our intensity as the game went on, but we could not get the reward,” the England boss said.
