The Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, has urged Nigerians to deepen democratic values and strengthen national unity as the country marks Democracy Day.
Issa-Onilu made the call in a statement issued on June 12 by his Deputy Director of Media and Communication, Paul Odenyi.
He described June 12 as a historic symbol of Nigerians’ resilience, courage, and determination in the struggle for democratic governance.
The NOA boss said the day also underscores the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms for all citizens. He noted that democracy remains the most inclusive and accountable system of government, as it allows citizens to freely choose their leaders, hold public officials accountable, and participate meaningfully in national affairs.
“Today, we celebrate not only the heroes and heroines who made sacrifices for the enthronement of democracy in Nigeria, but also the enduring spirit of the Nigerian people who continue to uphold democratic ideals despite various challenges,” Issa-Onilu said.
“Democracy gives every citizen a voice and offers the best platform for peaceful national development, social justice, and economic progress.”
He emphasised that true democracy extends beyond periodic elections, requiring continuous citizen engagement, respect for the rule of law, tolerance of diverse opinions, civic responsibility, and commitment to the collective good.
Issa-Onilu particularly called on Nigerian youth to reject misinformation, political violence, hate speech, and all forms of action that could undermine national cohesion and democratic institutions.
“As the agency charged with promoting civic values, patriotism, and national consciousness, the National Orientation Agency remains committed to strengthening democratic culture through sustained voter and civic education, public enlightenment, community engagement, and advocacy for responsible citizenship,” he added.
The DG commended the contributions of government institutions, civil society organisations, traditional rulers, religious leaders, the media, and development partners in advancing democratic governance and peaceful coexistence.
He urged all Nigerians to use the Democracy Day celebration to renew their commitment to the nation’s democratic journey and work together towards building a more united, peaceful, and prosperous Nigeria.
