KANO — Kano State Government has demarcated 1,300 kilometres of cattle routes across the state as part of efforts to reduce recurring conflicts between farmers and herders and promote peace.
The Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Danjuma Mahmoud, disclosed this during an interactive session with journalists in Kano while reviewing the achievements of the ministry over the past three years.
Mahmoud said the initiative was implemented under one of the state’s agricultural development projects and has recorded significant success in addressing disputes arising from encroachment on farmlands and grazing areas.
“One of the projects had a programme that demarcated about 1,300 kilometres of cattle routes across the state to help resolve the hydra-headed conflict between farmers and herders,” he said.
He explained that the intervention is part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen agricultural productivity, enhance rural livelihoods, and ensure food security across the state.
“That project has really achieved a lot,” the commissioner stated, noting that creating clearly defined routes for livestock movement has helped reduce friction between farming and pastoral communities.
Mahmoud explained that the state government has combined the initiative with other agricultural interventions, including rehabilitation of irrigation facilities, provision of fertilisers, and support for climate-smart farming practices.
He said the administration remains committed to policies that encourage peaceful coexistence while creating an enabling environment for both crop farmers and livestock producers to thrive.
The commissioner added that the government would continue to invest in agricultural infrastructure and conflict-prevention measures to sustain gains recorded in the sector and boost food production across Kano State
