Lagos Taskforce Launches Enforcement Operation Against Illegal Trading Along Alaba Rago Corridor

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Taskforce) has commenced a major enforcement operation along the Alaba Rago corridor of the Mile 2, Badagry Expressway following the expiration of a 72-hour ultimatum issued to traders and occupants operating illegally within the area.
The exercise, which began on Monday, targets illegal street trading, makeshift structures, and other encroachments on highways, pedestrian walkways, road medians and setbacks that violate the state’s environmental and urban planning regulations.
According to the Lagos State Taskforce, the operation is being carried out in collaboration with relevant enforcement agencies to restore order, improve public safety, ease traffic congestion and address persistent environmental challenges along the strategic Lagos–Badagry transport corridor.
Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, said the enforcement followed extensive public sensitisation campaigns during which traders and other occupants were urged to voluntarily vacate prohibited locations before the expiration of the government’s notice.
Akerele explained that the operation became necessary in response to increasing complaints from motorists, residents, pedestrians, visitors and environmental stakeholders over traffic obstruction, environmental degradation and security concerns linked to illegal activities along the corridor.
He reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws, protecting public infrastructure and maintaining the standards expected of a modern megacity.
The Taskforce chairman warned that all items, structures and installations found obstructing public spaces or violating existing laws would be removed in accordance with the state’s environmental regulations.
The enforcement exercise is being conducted under the supervision of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to promote a cleaner, safer and more orderly urban environment across Lagos.
