Activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has declared that his detention in Kuje Correctional Centre has only strengthened his resolve to continue his political and human rights campaigns.
Sowore made the remarks shortly after regaining his freedom following the bail granted to him by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
In a statement shared on his social media accounts, the activist described his detention as unjust and criticised the administration of President .
“Leaving Kuje Prison after being unjustly incarcerated by the failed traitor to the Nigerian people, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and his regime,” Sowore wrote.
He added, “Prison has never broken the resolve of those who fight for justice. If anything, it only strengthens our determination. The struggle continues. We will never surrender.”
Court grants Sowore ₦200 million bail
Justice of the Federal High Court in Abuja granted Sowore bail in the sum of ₦200 million on Tuesday.
The court ordered the AAC presidential candidate to provide two sureties as part of his bail conditions. One of the sureties must be a traditional ruler from his community, while the second must own landed property in Abuja.
Justice Umar also directed the prosecution to verify the sureties and ordered Sowore to deposit his international passport with the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court pending the conclusion of the trial.
Following the ruling, the judge released the defendant to his legal team and adjourned proceedings until July 6 for the commencement of his defence.
Background to the case
Sowore had earlier been remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre after the court ordered his detention pending the hearing of his motion seeking a stay of the revocation of his bail and bench warrant.
The court also dismissed an earlier application in which Sowore requested that Justice Umar withdraw from the case over allegations of bias.
The case stems from charges filed by the Department of State Services (DSS), which accused Sowore of cybercrime offences linked to social media posts in which he allegedly referred to President Tinubu as “a criminal” on X and Facebook.
The activist has consistently denied any wrongdoing and maintained that the charges against him are politically motivated.
