Moment Man Falls Into Open Well While Allegedly Attempting to Escape After Theft in Port Harcourt

A dramatic and unsettling incident occurred in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, after a man reportedly fell into an open well while attempting to escape following an alleged theft in a residential area.

The incident seen in the Trending Video which drew a large crowd, happened when the suspect was allegedly caught stealing from a compound in the area. Eyewitnesses said he took to his heels when residents raised alarm, but in the process of fleeing, he reportedly ran into an uncovered well and plunged inside.

Residents who witnessed the scene described the moment as chaotic and shocking.

“We just heard people shouting ‘thief, thief!’ and everyone started running after him,” said a resident who asked not to be named. “Before we knew what was happening, he had already fallen inside the well. It was a terrible sight.”

Another eyewitness, a trader in the area, said the incident highlighted the danger of neglected infrastructure in the community.

“That well has been there without proper covering for a long time. We have complained before. If it had been covered, this accident would not have happened at all,” she said.

A youth leader in the neighbourhood also expressed concern over both the alleged theft and the safety risks in the area.

“We are not supporting stealing in any form, but at the same time, our environment is dangerous. Open wells, broken slabs, and abandoned structures are everywhere. This could have been avoided,” he stated.

According to sources, residents quickly mobilized efforts to rescue the man after realizing he had fallen into the well. Some individuals reportedly used ropes and makeshift tools while waiting for additional help to arrive.

A resident involved in the rescue attempt said the situation was tense.

“He was shouting for help from inside the well. People were confused at first, but later we organized ourselves and tried to pull him out carefully,” he explained.

After sustained effort, the man was reportedly pulled out and handed over to security operatives for further questioning regarding the alleged theft. His condition at the time of rescue was not immediately confirmed.

The incident has sparked renewed concern among residents over the presence of uncovered wells and other hazardous structures in residential areas of Port Harcourt.

Many community members are now calling on local authorities to enforce stricter environmental safety regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“This is a warning to everyone. If the government doesn’t act, more accidents will happen,” a resident warned.

Security agencies are expected to investigate both the alleged theft and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
