MTN official, Sonny Onyegbula, battles divorce saga as wife alleges domestic violence, infidelity

A Lagos state high court is set to hear a contentious divorce suit involving Sonny Onyegbula, an official of MTN Nigeria, after his estranged wife, Nnedimma Onyegbula, accused him of years of domestic violence, emotional abuse, infidelity and financial manipulation.

In court documents filed in Suit No. LD/26404WD/2026, Nnedimma, a Nigerian lawyer based in the United States, urged the court to dissolve the marriage, arguing that it has broken down irretrievably.

She alleged that her husband repeatedly assaulted her during the marriage, claiming he choked her, grabbed her by the neck and physically attacked her despite her medical conditions, including Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) and Fibromyalgia.

The petitioner also claimed she lost consciousness after an alleged assault in 2012 and later received treatment at medical facilities in Lagos, while another alleged incident in 2014 reportedly required further treatment in the United States.

Beyond the allegations of physical abuse, she accused her husband of emotional neglect, extra-marital affairs and financial manipulation, maintaining that she funded the family’s traditional and church weddings, children’s education and other household expenses during the marriage.

However, Sonny Onyegbula denied all the allegations in his response before the court, insisting he neither assaulted nor neglected his wife and describing the accusations as false.

He also denied claims of infidelity, emotional abuse and financial dependence, maintaining that he consistently provided for his family throughout the marriage.

Following the exchange of pleadings, Justice O. O. Ogunjobi adjourned the matter until October 2, 2026, for trial.
