NUJ NEC Appoints Onayiga, Ebonyi Council Chairman, 10 Others Into Media Icon Awards Committee

ABAKALIKI – The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has approved the appointment of Otunba Gbenga Onayiga as the Organizing Committee Chairman of the forthcoming NUJ Media Icon Awards.
Also appointed into the Committee is the Chairman of Ebonyi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Nwafor Samson.
Other members of the committee are: Tukur Mohammed, NUJ Vice President, Zone A; Ibrahim Musa Maizare, Chairman, Zamfara Council; Rojab Muhammed, Chairman, Yobe Council; Tonye Yemoleigba, Chairman, Bayelsa Council; Ismail Ibrahim, Chairman, Jigawa Council; Leke Adegbite, Chairman, Ondo Council and Ayuku Pwaspo, Chairman, Plateau Council.
Others include: Salihu Mohammed Alkali, Chairman, Nasarawa Council; Tunde Olalere, Secretary, Lagos Council; Olayide Awosanya, Assistant Secretary, Lagos Council and Sylvester Okereke, Veteran Journalist, Lagos NUJ Council.
The appointments were approved at the recently concluded National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of NUJ held in Abuja and presided over by the National President of the Union, Comrade Alhassan Yahya.
The Media Icon Committee is expected to identify, screen, and nominate veteran journalists who have distinguished themselves in the profession and in other sectors of national life for recognition during the event.
Such veteran Journalists to be nominated by the Committee must have positively impacted the journalism profession and the overall development of the country.
Speaking on the importance of the Committee, NUJ National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya expressed confidence in the capacity, experience, and integrity of the members to deliver on their mandate and ensure that deserving individuals are recognised for their excellence, professionalism, and service to humanity.
According to him, the Union believes that recognising journalists who have paid their dues in the profession, would promote excellence, deepen journalism practice in Nigeria and encourage greater commitment to national development.
The President congratulated the Chairman and the committee members on their appointment and wished them success in the discharge of the assignment.
It would be recalled that the Organizing Committee Chairman, Otunba Gbenga Onayiga, had chaired the planning committees of last historical NUJ Media icon Awards.
