The Nigeria Union of Teachers (Nigeria Union of Teachers) has ordered all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to embark on an indefinite strike starting Monday, June 1, 2026, following the abduction of some teachers and pupils in the Oriire area of the state.
The directive, issued by the national leadership of the union and confirmed by the Oyo State chapter, directs all affected teachers to withdraw their services until further notice.
The strike action is a response to the continued captivity of the abducted teachers and pupils, whose rescue efforts have so far yielded no result. The union said the situation has created widespread fear among educators, increased anxiety for parents, and disrupted academic activities across affected communities.
According to the NUT, the prolonged insecurity has made learning environments unsafe, while also discouraging many parents from sending their children to school.
The union stated that the industrial action is aimed at pressing authorities to intensify efforts toward securing the safe and immediate release of the victims.
It urged teachers across the state to comply fully with the directive, remain peaceful, and stay safe while staying at home during the strike period.
The NUT also reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and security of teachers and learners, adding that it will continue engagements with relevant government authorities until the abducted teachers and pupils are safely rescued.
