The Senate Committee on Army has expressed deep sorrow over the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, describing his passing as a painful loss to the nation and the military community.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, said the committee received with sadness the news of the death of the retired senior military officer, who hailed from Batsari Local Government Area of Katsina State.
Major General Abubakar was abducted alongside his wife on May 30, 2026, along the Katsina–Matazu Road. His death has sparked renewed concerns over insecurity in parts of the country, particularly in areas affected by banditry and kidnappings.
Senator Yar’Adua noted that throughout his distinguished military career and even after retirement, General Abubakar served Nigeria with honour and remained actively engaged in national security discourse.
“The Senate Committee on Army received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of Major General Rabe Abubakar (Rtd.), former Director of Defence Information and a proud son of Batsari Local Government Area, Katsina State,” the statement said.
The committee extended its condolences to the deceased’s immediate family, the Nigerian Army, the people of Batsari Local Government Area, and the entire Katsina State.
“We pray that Almighty Allah grants him Aljannah Firdaus and gives his family the fortitude to bear this loss,” the statement added.
The committee also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at improving security across the country.
According to Senator Yar’Adua, the Senate Committee on Army would continue to work closely with the Executive arm of government and relevant security agencies to strengthen measures designed to protect the lives and property of Nigerians.
He further commended the dedication and sacrifices of security personnel across the country and urged citizens to remain united and patient as ongoing efforts to restore peace and stability continue.
The death of General Abubakar has drawn tributes from military officers, security experts and public officials who remember him for his professionalism, commitment to service and contributions to national security communications during and after his military career.
