Stakeholders in the maritime sector of the Nation’s economy are set for the 2026 edition of the Shipping Correspondents Association of Nigeria (SCAN) Dockworkers’ Day, which holds tomorrow, June 4, at Rockview Hotels, Apapa, Lagos, with key maritime stakeholders expected to lead discussions on sustainability and workers’ welfare in the nation’s ports.
Expected at the event are the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola; immediate past President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Adewale Adeyanju; and the President of the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping (NCS), Alhaji Aminu Umar, among other industry leaders.
Scheduled to commence at 10:00 a.m., this year’s event, themed “Green Ports: Sustainable Practices for Dockworkers,” will focus on advancing environmentally responsible port operations, enhancing operational efficiency, and improving the welfare of dockworkers across Nigerian seaports.
According to SCAN, the annual programme seeks to align Nigeria’s port industry with global sustainability standards while ensuring that dockworkers are adequately prepared for the transition to greener and technology-driven maritime operations.
In a joint statement issued by SCAN President, Moses Ebosele, and Chairman of the Organising Committee, Yusuf Babalola, the association described Dockworkers’ Day as an important platform for recognising the vital contributions of dockworkers to national economic growth and addressing emerging challenges facing the maritime workforce.“SCAN Dockworkers’ Day serves as a platform to acknowledge the essential contributions of dockworkers to our economy, while also addressing the urgent need for sustainable practices in our ports,” the statement said.
The association noted that as the global maritime industry embraces digitalisation and environmental sustainability, there is a growing need to equip dockworkers with the knowledge, skills, and tools required to adapt to evolving operational realities.
Alhaji Aminu Umar is expected to deliver the keynote address, while Adewale Adeyanju, who also serves as Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), will chair the event.
Goodwill messages are expected from the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), the Acting Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), and other notable stakeholders within the maritime sector.
SCAN has also called on government agencies, shipping companies, the Nigeria Customs Service, freight forwarders, terminal operators, and other industry players to participate actively in the event and contribute to efforts aimed at building a more sustainable and worker-friendly port environment.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to fostering collaboration among stakeholders, improving dockworkers’ welfare, and promoting greater awareness of sustainable port practices across Nigeria’s maritime industry.
