State Police: Nigeria will be safer if local governments take charge of security – Ubani

Chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association Electoral Committee, Monday Ubani, says Nigeria will be safer if local governments take charge of security.

Ubani made this statement on Thursday while responding to questions in an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Morning Show’.

His remark came after the Senate on Wednesday passed the contentious State Police Bill into law to address the worsening insecurity in Nigeria.

“Security is local. As a local government chairman, I know every entry and exit point in my area and can work with security agencies and the state government to protect my community.

“If local governments are empowered to take responsibility for security, Nigeria will be much safer. State police is the answer to Nigeria’s over-centralised policing system.

“We need state police. Over-centralised policing has failed to adequately protect lives and property.

“I commend this administration and the 10th National Assembly for taking the historic step of decentralising Nigeria’s policing system to strengthen security,” he said.
