The Taraba State Government has announced the immediate suspension of all mining activities across the state following security concerns that could threaten the prevailing peace and stability in the region.
The directive was announced on Friday in a statement signed on behalf of the governor by the Secretary to the Government of Taraba State, Barrister Gebon Timothy Katars.
The government said the decision was based on credible security reports indicating the existence of threats capable of undermining the peace currently being enjoyed by residents of the state.
As part of efforts to address the situation, the state government disclosed plans to establish a new task force that will oversee security and safety in the mining sector.
The task force, according to the statement, is expected to ensure that mining operations resume only after the identified security threats have been effectively addressed.
The government also directed all local government councils and traditional rulers to enforce strict compliance with the suspension order within their respective jurisdictions.
Authorities warned that any violations of the directive should be reported immediately to the nearest security agency, stressing that offenders would face serious consequences.
In addition, the government revealed that it has concluded arrangements to meet with artisanal miners next week to brief them on new security measures and vigilance requirements.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property, the state government emphasised that mining activities would only be allowed to resume under a secure and properly regulated environment.
Residents were urged to cooperate with security agencies and promptly report any suspicious activities.
The suspension takes immediate effect.
