Traditional Ruler’s Son Arrested For Setting Suspected Firewood Thief Ablaze In Bayelsa

YENAGOA – Ibobuminate Oweifa, Son of the traditional ruler of Okodi community in Ogbia Local Government Area, of Bayelsa State, was Yesterday arrested by officers of the state police command for allegedly setting one Godgift Biko, ablaze for stealing fire wood.
The state commissioner of police, Cp, Iyamah Edebor, in a press statement issued in Yenagoa, the city capital, said the victim was rescued and taken to clinic in the community where he received first aid treatments.
He further stated that “The DPO immediately swung into action and arrested the suspect. Preliminary investigation has commenced and upon conclusion the suspect will be charged to court”
He also added that the command strongly condemned every forms of violence, jungle justice and cts capable of endangering human life.
Meanwhile, the suspect, Mr. Ibobuminaten Oweifa, has explained to the police the circumstances that led him to set the victim, Godgift Biko on fire, claiming that the victim was caught attempting to steal his wood before the incident.
Oweifa made the disclosure while being interrogated by investigators following his arrest in connection with the incident, which has sparked concern among residents.
According to the suspect, an altercation broke out after he allegedly caught Biko trying to steal pieces of wood belonging to him.
He claimed the confrontation escalated, leading to the incident in which the victim was set ablaze.
The victim, Godgift Biko, is currently receiving medical treatment at the emergency ward of Federal Medical Centre Yenagoa.
Police authorities confirmed that the suspect remains in custody and is assisting investigators with their inquiries. They emphasized that the suspect’s statement represents only his version of events and that investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
