World Cup 2026- In one of the most surprising results of the early stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, European champions Spain were held to a goalless draw by World Cup debutants Cape Verde at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
Cape Verde, ranked 67th in the world, earned their first-ever point at a World Cup against a Spain side fresh off their Euro 2024 triumph and entering the match as one of the tournament favorites. The result sends shockwaves through Group H, which also includes Uruguay and Saudi Arabia, leaving the group wide open after just one matchday.
Spain, managed by Luis de la Fuente, lined up in a 4-3-3 formation with Unai Simón in goal, Marcos Llorente at right-back, Pau Cubarsí and Aymeric Laporte in central defense, and Marc Cucurella on the left. Rodri captained the midfield alongside Pedri and Fabián Ruiz, while the attack featured Ferran Torres, Mikel Oyarzabal, and Gavi. Notably, teenage sensation Lamine Yamal started on the bench.
Cape Verde, under coach Bubista, adopted a compact 4-1-4-1 setup designed to absorb pressure. Experienced 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha anchored a backline featuring Steven Moreira, Roberto Lopes, Diney Borges, and Sidny Lopes Cabral. Ryan Mendes captained the side, with Dailon Livramento leading the line.
From the outset, Spain dictated proceedings, enjoying 74% possession. They created chance after chance, but clinical finishing eluded them. Ferran Torres was particularly wasteful, hitting the crossbar and missing opportunities created by Cucurella’s dangerous crosses. Cape Verde sat deep, forming a low block that limited Spain’s penetration despite 51 touches in the opposition box.
Vozinha emerged as the standout performer, making several crucial saves in the first half, including four notable stops to keep the score level at halftime. His heroics kept Cape Verde’s dream alive on their World Cup debut.
Spain ramped up the intensity after the break, introducing Lamine Yamal and Mikel Merino around the 71st minute, followed by Dani Olmo and Nico Williams. The total shot count reached 27 for Spain against just 6 for Cape Verde, with 7 on target for La Roja. Corners favored Spain 11-1, and they created multiple big chances, but the woodwork, wayward finishing, and Vozinha’s brilliance stood firm. Cape Verde managed a few counters but lacked the final third quality to seriously threaten Unai Simón.
Spain must quickly regroup as they face stiffer tests ahead. Cape Verde will celebrate this point and look to build momentum. Group H is now anyone’s to win, promising exciting encounters in the coming days.
