The Yobe State Government has commended the Biomedical Science Research and Training Centre (BioRTC), Yobe State University, for its remarkable contributions to scientific research, capacity building, and international collaboration, describing the Centre as a beacon of hope in advancing biomedical research and innovation in Nigeria and across Africa.
The commendation was made during a courtesy visit by a delegation of international scientists, researchers, and faculty members participating in the Combined 6th BioRTC Summer School and 2nd Computational Neuroscience Course 2026.
Speaking on behalf of Governor Mai Mala Buni, the Deputy Governor of Yobe State, Hon. Idi Barde Gubana, welcomed the delegation and expressed appreciation to the international partners and scientists for their continued support and collaboration with BioRTC.
He noted that the presence of renowned scientists and researchers from different parts of the world sends a strong message of solidarity, partnership, and hope in the collective effort to tackle pressing health challenges through scientific research and innovation.
The Deputy Governor specifically commended the Founder and Director of BioRTC, Professor Mahmoud Bukar Maina, for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to advancing science and research in Yobe State.
He described Professor Maina as an outstanding ambassador of Yobe State whose efforts have attracted global attention and partnerships to the state through the Centre’s groundbreaking initiatives and international training programmes.
According to him, the Summer School and specialist training programmes have continued to attract resource persons and participants from countries including the United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil, Germany, Japan, France, Spain, Switzerland and several African nations, thereby positioning Yobe State as an emerging hub for advanced biomedical research and scientific excellence.
The Deputy Governor further noted that the establishment of the permanent BioRTC facility at Yobe State University marks a significant milestone in the state’s quest to become a leading centre for biomedical research, innovation, and capacity development.
In his remarks, the Founder and Director of BioRTC, Professor Mahmoud Bukar Maina, expressed gratitude to Governor Mai Mala Buni for his unwavering support towards science, research, and innovation in the state.
He disclosed that since its inception, BioRTC has trained over 1,000 professionals, researchers, academics, and students through its various workshops, fellowships, summer schools, and specialized capacity-building programmes.
Professor Maina explained that the Centre was established with the vision of developing a new generation of scientists equipped with cutting-edge skills to address emerging challenges in health, biomedical sciences, artificial intelligence, and computational research.
He revealed that one of the Centre’s flagship research projects on kidney disease in Bade Emirate is nearing completion and is expected to provide valuable insights into addressing kidney-related health challenges in the region.
The BioRTC Director emphasized that the Centre’s greatest achievement lies not only in its infrastructure and research outputs but also in the human capital it continues to develop.
“BioRTC is building more talented individuals than me. Our goal is to nurture future scientists and researchers who will surpass our achievements and make meaningful contributions to society,” he stated.
Also speaking, the Deputy Head of the School of Life Sciences, University of Sussex, United Kingdom, Prof. Miguel Maravall, commended the Centre for creating a platform that brings together participants from Nigeria, West Africa, and other parts of the world.
He noted that the ongoing Summer School and Computational Neuroscience Course are providing participants with advanced scientific knowledge, practical skills, and international networking opportunities necessary for tackling contemporary research challenges.
According to him, the programme continues to strengthen regional and international collaboration while building the capacity of young researchers across Nigeria and West Africa.
The Summer School has attracted participants, facilitators, and researchers from diverse academic and professional backgrounds, reinforcing BioRTC’s growing reputation as a centre of excellence for biomedical research, innovation, and scientific training in Africa.
