Abia Govt Ecological Challenges: Deputy Speaker Seeks Lasting FG Solution

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu has appealed for federal intervention to address gully erosion affecting communities in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State.

Kalu made the appeal after leading officials of the Ecological Project Office on an assessment of erosion sites in Uzuakoli and Ozuitem communities.

He says the impact of the erosions are beyond the capacity of the Abia State Government and requires federal interventions.

The Deputy Speaker asked the Ecological Project Office to carry out a new technical assessment as the erosion sites have extended to about five kilometres since he first requested intervention three years ago, making earlier cost estimates no longer applicable.

He further appealed to the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, to provide relief materials for residents displaced by the erosion while permanent work is being planned.

More than 10 houses have been lost to the erosion, forcing residents to leave their homes.

Farmlands and roads have also been affected.
