Celebrations in Mexico City turned tragic after the national team’s World Cup win over Ecuador, securing its first knockout-stage victory since 1986 and a place in the round of 16.
Mexico City’s Public Health Secretariat said on Wednesday that four people died during celebrations following the Mexican national team’s World Cup victory.
Health authorities said three of the victims, two women aged 19 and 48, and a 44-year-old man, died from asphyxiation.
A fourth victim, a 30-year-old man who had earlier been taken to hospital after suffering an epileptic seizure and gastrointestinal bleeding, died of cardiorespiratory arrest, authorities said.
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada expressed condolences to the victims’ families and pledged full support from her administration in the investigation.
