Ebonyi Terminates All Ongoing 2-Km Rural Road Contracts, Warns Defaulting Contractors

The Ebonyi State Government has announced the immediate termination of all ongoing 2-kilometre rural road contracts across the state’s three senatorial zones over what it described as the contractors’ poor performance and prolonged delays in project execution.

The Commissioner for Special Projects, Dr. Ngozi Obichukwu, disclosed this to journalists in Abakaliki shortly after a meeting with contractors handling the projects.

She expressed dissatisfaction with the slow pace of work, noting that despite the expiration of the contract timelines, many of the projects remained uncompleted.

According to the commissioner, the rural road initiative is one of the flagship programmes of Governor Francis Nwifuru’s administration and is aimed at improving transportation in rural communities, particularly by enabling farmers to move their produce to urban markets with ease.

Obichukwu said the failure of the contractors to deliver the projects as agreed had defeated the purpose for which the roads were awarded, making the termination of the contracts necessary.

She warned contractors handling other state government projects to improve their performance and ensure timely completion of their jobs or risk having their contracts revoked.

“The rural road programme is a priority of Governor Francis Nwifuru’s administration and cannot be treated with levity. Contractors handling government projects must deliver according to agreed specifications and timelines or face appropriate sanctions,” she said.
