Normalcy is gradually returning to South Africa after Tuesday’s nationwide protests disrupted commercial activities and forced the closure of businesses, shopping centres and malls across the country.
Although the protests have subsided in many areas, reports indicated that looting occurred as demonstrators stormed shops and supermarkets, carting away goods and valuables.
Many of the affected businesses were reportedly owned by foreign nationals, who were among the main targets of the attacks.
However, there were no confirmed reports that Nigerian-owned businesses or shops were affected by the unrest.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has concluded arrangements to evacuate another batch of more than 200 stranded Nigerians from South Africa this week.
The planned evacuation is part of ongoing efforts to assist Nigerians affected by the unrest and ensure their safe return home.
The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienta, confirmed the planned evacuation but could not immediately confirm the exact date.
The President of Nigerian Citizens in South Africa, Rev. Frank Onyekwelu, also confirmed that another airlift had been scheduled.
According to him, over 200 Nigerians are expected to be evacuated on Thursday.
