Former adult film star Deyci Alejandra Omaña Ortiz, popularly known as Amaranta Hank, has been sworn in as a senator in Colombia after winning election on a platform focused on protecting the rights of adult-content creators.

The 33-year-old took the oath of office on Monday in Bogotá as a member of the left-wing Historic Pact party. Before entering politics, Ortiz worked as a journalist and later joined the adult entertainment industry in 2017. She left the industry two years later to pursue a political career.

Elected in March to represent Colombia’s Norte de Santander region, Ortiz said one of her key priorities is securing legal and social protections for people working in the adult entertainment industry, arguing that many are exploited and denied basic rights.

In a campaign video, she said, “These women have been unprotected by the state because, due to misinformation, prejudice and double standards, no one has declared to regulate it.”

Addressing critics who questioned her fitness for public office because of her past, Ortiz said, “Why can’t a woman who was in the adult industry aspire to a popularly elected office?”

She added that her previous career exposed her to discrimination and inequality, saying, “My experience allowed me to understand inequality, the struggle for freedom and the popular economy, arguments that I now promise to bring directly into legislative debate.” She also noted, “The problem is that society consumes adult films but denies us the possibility of speaking in spaces of power.”

Beyond advocating for adult-content creators, Ortiz said she plans to push for improved mental health services and stronger measures to prevent sexual abuse. Following her election victory, she declared, “I feel embraced by my people.” She added, “There is a political transformation underway that still has a long way to go but the important thing is that it has already begun in some way.”

The development has generated mixed reactions on social media, with many debating her political victory and campaign agenda.

Reacting, D-dj Rudexy wrote, “You all see her from the other way round .. i see democracy.”

Timon Duniya Timothy commented, “From trending online to trending in parliament 😂.”

Sunday Iheanyichukwu Wisdom wrote, “Na once I go search her videos to check something.”

Bubaraye Jimmy Ebi said, “Wondering what specific rights she was advocating for that won her the seat.”

Prince Oyeyemi added, “They vote for her Because of her campaign.”

While some users praised the democratic process and her right to seek public office, others questioned her political agenda and expressed differing views on her past career.
