Gunmen have abducted three students of the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), with police rescuing one of the victims during a search-and-rescue operation in Nasarawa State.
The Nasarawa State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday by its spokesperson, SP Ramhan Nansel.
According to the statement, the students were kidnapped on Tuesday night from Living Seed Lodge, an off-campus hostel situated in a bushy area on the outskirts of the students’ residential community in Lafia.
The command said it received a distress call at about 9:20 p.m. from the university’s Chief Security Officer, informing the police that unidentified armed men had invaded the hostel and abducted three students.
Following the report, the Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, directed the immediate deployment of tactical teams, patrol operatives and other security personnel to the scene.
The police said the operatives quickly launched a coordinated search-and-rescue operation in the surrounding forest, leading to the successful rescue of one of the abducted students.
The statement added that efforts had been intensified to secure the release of the remaining two victims and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
“The prompt response of the police led to the successful rescue of one of the abducted students.
“Efforts have since been intensified to ensure the safe rescue of the remaining two victims still in captivity and the arrest of the perpetrators,” the statement read.
The commissioner directed all operational and intelligence assets of the command to sustain the operation until the remaining victims are rescued unharmed.
He assured residents that the command remained committed to securing the release of the victims and ensuring the kidnappers were brought to justice.
The police also appealed to members of the public to remain calm, stay vigilant and provide credible information that could aid the ongoing operation.
Residents were further advised to report any suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police station without delay.
