Indian student drowns in Germany; four questioned

MANGALURU: An Indian student from Marakada-Kunjathbail in Mangaluru, who was pursuing a BBA in Germany, reportedly died in a suspected drowning incident in Leipzig Thursday.The deceased has been identified as Mohammed Aniz Abubakker, 21. Four students, including two Indians, were taken into police custody for questioning.Aniz was a third-semester BBA student at Rahn Education Institution in Halle. He had moved to Germany about 18 months ago after completing his pre-university education in Mangaluru. His father, Marakada Abubakker Siddiq, works in Saudi.Aniz had gone trekking with classmates and friends on Thursday morning, said P A Hameed Padubidri, a pro bono lawyer who is coordinating with the Indian Embassy in Berlin to facilitate the repatriation of Aniz’s mortal remains to Mangaluru.The group later visited a water recreation area near the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig. Emergency responders were summoned to the Landauer Bridge area, where Aniz’s body was recovered, late Thursday afternoon.
