Kenneth Okonkwo: Tinubu should resign instead of seeking re-election in 2027

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has urged President Bola Tinubu to resign rather than seek re-election in the 2027 general elections, citing what he described as the administration’s poor handling of insecurity and governance.

Okonkwo made the call on Friday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, where he also reacted to the now-overturned Federal High Court judgment in Abuja that deregistered the ADC.

According to the former presidential spokesperson, the legal challenges facing the party were part of efforts to weaken the opposition and pave the way for President Tinubu’s re-election.

“Everything about this judgment is queued towards frustrating the opposition and trying to coronate Tinubu, according to the Minister of Aviation, and not elect him in 2027 because Tinubu, by his performance, has gone back to Bourdillon with one flight ticket by 2027,” he said.

Okonkwo criticised the Federal Government’s handling of insecurity, alleging that violent attacks and kidnappings had become a daily occurrence across the country.

“Is it in the area of insecurity? I told you when you want to give an example of insecurity, you don’t need to refer to yesterday because it’s a daily occurrence. In Plateau, in Benue people are massacred in their numbers, people are beheaded in Oyo State and they want you to praise them for what they would have prevented.

“Life and the destruction of life is better prevented than cured because when somebody is killed, it’s final,” he said.

The ADC chieftain also shared a personal experience involving one of his employees, whose mother was allegedly kidnapped in Kaduna State.

According to him, the kidnappers demanded a ransom running into hundreds of millions of naira and allegedly tortured the victim when the family could not raise the money.

“Let me tell you a personal story that pains me. My worker, they kidnapped the mother in Kaduna State and they were asking them for ransom and when they could not provide the hundreds of millions they were asking for, they broke two fingers of the mother.

“He is the only child of the mother. You can know the pains that I’m going through seeing these things.

“These ones are not reported,” he said.

Maintaining that the country was facing deep security and governance challenges, Okonkwo said President Tinubu should step down instead of preparing to seek another term in office.

“The issue here is that Tinubu should not even allow the election to hold; he should resign and go in peace,” he added.
