The Kogi State Internal Revenue Service (KGIRS) has warned individuals and groups against collecting taxes or levies illegally on highways, saying such practices are prohibited under Nigeria’s new tax law.
Speaking in Lokoja, the Chairman of KGIRS, Dr. Salihu Sule Enehe, said the tax reform, which took effect on January 1, 2026, outlaws unauthorised revenue collection on highways and aims to strengthen lawful tax administration. He warned that anyone found engaging in illegal tax collection would face arrest and prosecution in accordance with the law.
According to Enehe, the reform also abolishes the sale of revenue emblems and the collection of haulage fees on highways. He explained that legitimate haulage charges can only be collected at designated loading and off-loading points, in line with the provisions of the new tax regime.
The KGIRS chairman urged transport operators, business owners and members of the public to comply with the new directives and report incidents of illegal tax collection to the appropriate authorities. He said the Kogi State Government remains committed to promoting a transparent, efficient and business-friendly tax system that supports economic growth and protects the interests of law-abiding taxpayers.
