Man Jailed After Breaking Into Girlfriend’s Mother’s Room to Retrieve Gifts He Bought for Her

A 28-year-old man, Bismark Aduah, is serving a prison sentence at the Winneba Local Prison in Ghana after being convicted of theft for breaking into his girlfriend’s mother’s room.

Speaking in an interview with Crime Check, Bismark said he had been in a relationship with his girlfriend, Rebecca, for nine years and that the couple had lived together in Ashaiman for the past two years.

According to him, Rebecca’s mother strongly disapproved of their relationship and never accepted him.

Bismark explained that he and his girlfriend later returned to her mother’s house to retrieve items he claimed he had bought for Rebecca during their relationship.

He admitted that they forced their way into the room by breaking the door and its lock before taking the belongings to Rebecca’s father’s residence.

Following the incident, Rebecca’s mother reported the matter to the police, leading to the arrest and prosecution of both Bismark and his girlfriend.

According to Bismark, the Afransi Circuit Court sentenced him to five months’ imprisonment and also imposed a GH¢1,560 fine.

He disclosed that he had already spent two weeks behind bars but was unable to pay the fine required for his release.

Rebecca was also convicted and sentenced to one month and two weeks in prison. However, Bismark said he paid her fine, allowing her to regain her freedom.

The case has since attracted attention on social media, with many users debating the legality of retrieving gifts after a relationship turns sour and the consequences of taking matters into one’s own hands.
