France advanced convincingly to the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after they defeated Sweden 3-0 in a dominant performance.
Kylian Mbappé delivered a brace that broke records, while Bradley Barcola slotted home another goal to help send Didier Deschamps’ team through to a clash against Paraguay.
Mbappé thought he had opened the scoring 20 minutes in when he burst through Sweden’s defence and beat Jacob Widell Zetterström, but officials flagged him offside in a tight call.
The France captain later found himself unmarked at the back post yet struck his first-time shot against the foot of the post, with the ball rebounding off Victor Lindelöf before the keeper gathered it.
Michael Olise nearly produced a moment of magic shortly afterward. He met a looping clearance with a spectacular overhead kick inside the box that slammed against the far post. Ousmane Dembélé curled the rebound wide.
Mbappé finally broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time. Dembélé picked him out following a short corner routine. The Real Madrid star left Viktor Gyökeres on the ground before he bent a fierce drive into the right side of the net.
France extended their lead in the 53rd minute. Olise threaded a through ball between Gustaf Lagerbielke’s legs to set up Barcola for a thumping finish.
Olise kept pressing for his own goal and saw a long-range curler tipped wide, before Zetterström smothered his low shot in a one-on-one after the hydration break.

Although Olise did not score, he registered his fifth assist of the tournament. He delivered another perfectly weighted pass for Mbappé, who lifted his shot over Zetterström to seal the resounding win.
Sweden attempted a late rally as Gyökeres pounced on a loose ball and fired low, but Mike Maignan got down well to push it away and maintain the clean sheet.
Mbappé Reflects on Record-Breaking Night
Following the match, Mbappé earned Man of the Match honors. In his interview, he made it clear he focuses on team success rather than personal tallies:
”I am NOT looking at the top scorer rankings… also, I am convinced that Leo Messi will score even more goals.”
The brace lifted Mbappé to a record 10 World Cup knockout-stage goals and 18 goals overall at the finals. He now trails only Lionel Messi on the all-time World Cup scoring chart. France also became the first side to net at least three goals in five consecutive World Cup matches, underlining their strong title credentials.
