Media personality Toke Makinwa has stirred online discussions following her comments about the emotional depth of many Nigerian men.
Speaking on a recent episode of the MENtality podcast hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Makinwa said that a large number of Nigerian men tend to depend mainly on financial provision as their way of contributing to romantic relationships, while often overlooking emotional bonding and effective communication.
She argued that the popular perception of Nigerian women being overly materialistic is, in part, influenced by the way some men approach relationships.
According to her, many men tend to equate financial generosity with love and assume that giving money alone is sufficient to attract or sustain a relationship.
Makinwa added that, based on her experiences, some men quickly resort to monetary gestures instead of taking time to build genuine emotional connections with potential partners.
“From time immemorial, a relationship between a man and a woman has always been transactional, right from the Garden of Eden, right from our parents’ days. And the degree at which it is happening now, I will blame the men. Sometimes, that [financial benefits] is all men have to offer. Nigerian men don’t have games aside from money. Once a Nigerian man makes money, he starts throwing it at the hottest girls. Sometimes, you meet a man and you want to know him but he is offering you money. Men have offered women the strangest things and it made me realise that men feel cash is all they need to show you. Most girls who are materialistic today, men taught them how to make demands,” she said.
She further noted that this pattern has helped shape a culture where material expectations are now deeply embedded in modern relationships.
The actress also suggested that many women developed material preferences after repeatedly being shown that financial offerings were the primary way some men express interest.
Her comments have since triggered mixed reactions on social media, with some users agreeing that emotional intelligence is often lacking in relationships, while others felt she was unfairly generalising Nigerian men.
