The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo , has congratulated the Minister of Works, Senator David Nweze Umahi, on his 63rd birthday, describing him as a distinguished public servant whose leadership has significantly influenced infrastructure development in Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Deputy President General of the organization, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and the Deputy Secretary General, Professor Chibuikeya Achoakawa, Ohanaeze praised Umahi’s contributions to the Federal Ministry of Works, stating that his tenure has introduced a new approach to infrastructure development and public service delivery.
The organization also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Umahi as the first person of Igbo extraction to serve as Minister of Works since the ministry was established in 1951.
It described the appointment as a landmark in Nigeria’s political history and a recognition of the competence and capacity of the Igbo people in national development.
According to the statement, Umahi’s transition from governor to Minister of Works has positioned him among the key drivers of the Federal Government’s infrastructure agenda. Ohanaeze credited him with promoting innovative construction methods, particularly the increased use of concrete technology in road construction, which it said has stimulated discussions on durability, sustainability, and value for money in the country’s road infrastructure.
The organization further highlighted the minister’s hands-on approach to project supervision, noting that his regular inspections of project sites and engagement with contractors and engineers demonstrate a commitment to ensuring quality and timely delivery of road projects.
Ohanaeze said the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope infrastructure agenda has renewed attention on long-standing infrastructure deficits across the country, including the Southeast. It expressed the view that ongoing federal road projects in the region represent an important step toward addressing years of neglect and restoring public confidence in equitable national development.
The group added that the rehabilitation and construction of critical roads across the Southeast would enhance economic growth, improve connectivity, and strengthen regional integration.
Describing Umahi as a “professor in practice” in infrastructure transformation, Ohanaeze said his leadership reflects discipline, technical expertise, and dedication to national service.
The organization wished the minister good health, wisdom, and long life, while urging him to remain focused and committed to his responsibilities. It noted that public officials would ultimately be judged by the impact of their service and the legacy they leave behind.
Ohanaeze also reaffirmed that the aspirations of the Igbo people remain centered on development, inclusion, and national progress, stressing that sustainable infrastructure and effective governance are critical to the nation’s advancement.
The organization concluded by calling on Nigerian leaders to promote unity, responsibility, and constructive engagement as the country pursues greater economic growth and infrastructure development.
