The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for Tijani Fatai, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, to be immediately suspended for attending a gathering intended to support President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 reelection.
Viral footage showed Fatai coming at the Lagos branch of the City Boy Movement’s inauguration in Ikeja on Tuesday, where he greeted group members.
The movement, which drew political leaders, traditional rulers, youth representatives and members of the All Progressives Congress, pledged to mobilise grassroots support for Tinubu’s second-term bid.
Reacting via a post on social media, the NDC condemned Fatai’s presence at the event, describing it as partisan and injurious to the neutrality expected of the police.
The party stated that it condemned in the strongest terms the appearance of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani, at what it described as a partisan gathering promoting a particular candidate ahead of the general election.
The NDC accused the APC-led government of displaying scant regard for public institutions, maintaining that the commissioner’s conduct had cast doubt on his capacity to act impartially during the elections.
It argued that a Commissioner of Police being seen at a partisan event could only suggest that he would be biased in carrying out his duties during the polls.
The party consequently called on the Nigeria Police Force to immediately suspend and sanction Fatai.
It further demanded that the police commit to political neutrality and ensure protection for voters and supporters of opposition candidates during the elections, while urging the force to safeguard every voter regardless of religion, ethnicity or political affiliation.
The NDC also demanded that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police resign immediately for what it described as denigrating the institution of the police.
The Lagos State Police Command was yet to respond to the allegations at the time of filing this report.
