Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has announced that Parliament will not sit on July 10, 2026, to allow Members of Parliament from flood affected constituencies to take part in the National General Cleaning Exercise.
The decision follows the government’s declaration of July 10 and July 11, 2026, as National General Cleaning Days in seven regions affected by recent flooding.
The nationwide exercise is aimed at clearing blocked drains and waterways to reduce the risk of more flooding.
Addressing Parliament, Speaker Bagbin said the decision was reached after consultations with the leadership of the House on Parliament’s role in supporting the cleanup campaign.
He said MPs from the affected regions would have the opportunity to return to their constituencies and lead the exercise with residents.
“Among the matters we considered was whether it would be appropriate for the House not to sit on Friday, July 10, 2026, to enable Honourable Members from the affected regions to return to their constituencies and provide direct leadership in the cleanup exercise alongside their people. Definitely, it was a unanimous yes,” he said.
The Speaker added that Parliament would later communicate its revised business schedule to Members.
The National General Cleaning Exercise is expected to bring together residents, local authorities, and other stakeholders to clear drains and improve sanitation in flood prone communities.
