Three suspects have been arrested following the death of a 25-year-old University of Jos graduate and model, Ibrahim Mbaya, popularly known as “Ibee,” who was allegedly beaten to death after being accused of stealing a mobile phone in Plateau State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday at an off-campus apartment behind the City of David area along Ring Road, Jos. Mbaya, who was still resolving an outstanding academic issue at the University of Jos, had attended a social event before spending the night at a friend’s apartment because it was too late for him to return home.
According to reports, the following morning, his friend claimed an iPhone had gone missing and accused Mbaya of stealing it since they were the only two people in the room. Although he initially left the apartment, he reportedly returned after being asked to come back and explain himself.
On his return, Mbaya was allegedly confronted by his friend and several other youths, who accused him of stealing the phone. Witnesses said he was brutally assaulted with sticks and other objects for hours in an attempt to force a confession until he became unconscious. A nurse who later examined him reportedly confirmed that he had died.
The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the incident, announcing the arrest of Rinji Daniel Fwanji, Emmanuel Newyear, and Nensemka Fwanji over the alleged culpable homicide. Police also disclosed that one of the suspects was seen in a viral video striking the deceased with a large wooden plank, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other suspects who fled the scene.
Reacting to the incident, former Acting President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Prince Miaphen, described the alleged killing as “barbaric and unacceptable,” calling for a thorough investigation and justice for the deceased. The police also condemned jungle justice, warning that anyone who takes the law into their own hands would be prosecuted.
