A video of a young poultry farm worker venting his frustrations over low wages and unfair deductions has gone viral on social media, with the worker warning that continued joblessness among Ghana’s youth could push some toward crime.
In the video, the man, seen shirtless inside what appears to be a poultry facility where he works directly addressed President John Dramani Mahama over the state of youth employment.
“President Mahama, create jobs for the youth, or we will be forced to pick up guns and engage in armed robbery,” he said, before detailing his specific grievances. “I work with this man, and it is 6:02 p.m., yet he says he will deduct GH¢20 from my daily wage of GH¢50 when I go home. I pay my own electricity and water bills. He pays me GH¢1,200, but the work is not easy.”
The clip has resonated widely online, with many social media users sympathizing with the worker’s frustrations over wage deductions and the broader difficulty of securing stable, fairly paid work as a young person in Ghana.
